You may know that September and October are the best time to harvest grapes but did you know the time of day is just as important? It is more common practice around the world to harvest grapes In the dead of night. Harvesting at night saves money as no need to cool grapes prior to crushing them, is easier on the workers and ensures a stable sugar level in the grapes, something that fluctuates when the temperature rises. 1. Researchers believe grapes have existed for around 65 million years, and that some of the grape varieties enjoyed by us today are directly descended from these primordial fruits.
2. Humans have been farming grapes for 8,000 years. Archeologists believe the first grapes were grown in Eastern Europe and the fruit spread from there.
3. Grape farming is the biggest food industry, 25 million acres of land worldwide produce 72 million tons of grapes every year.
4. There are more than 8,000 grape varieties known to scientists, and more than 1,300 varieties are currently used to make wine around the world.
5. About 600 grapes are needed to make one bottle of wine.
6. The earliest archaeological evidence of winemaking from grapes was found in Georgia in the Caucasus and dates back to 6,000BC.
7. Grape leaves are edible. They can be an interesting replacement for cabbage leaves in rolls.
8. The science of growing grapes is called viticulture. However, when the purpose of viticulture is the production of wine, it is then called as viniculture.
9. The white film, called “bloom,” is something that you see on many soft fruits and protects the grape from things like moisture loss and decay.
10. The famous windows XP desktop background “bliss” was only possible due to an infestation that killed all of the grapes that would have been in that field.
