  1. Fossil records show that the date palm has existed for at least 50 million years.
  2. Despite its origin being lost in antiquity, The date palm is believed to have originated in the lands around the Persian Gulf.
  3. It is believed that the date palm was cultivated as early as 4000 B.C by - Ancient Mesopotamian.
  4. About 3% of the earth’s farmland is covered by date palms, producing four million tons a year.
  5. There are more than 200 varieties of dates. 
  6. Medjool, large and caramel-like, is the hardest to grow and therefore one of the most expensive to buy.
  7. Date palms need an average of 300 liters of water a day.
  8. Date trees typically reach about 21–23 meters (69–75 ft) in height.
  9. The fruiting period of date palm starts at fruit set and ends at fruit maturation; its length (of about 120 to 200 days) varies from one date variety to another and depends on environmental conditions.
  10. Scientists have successfully grown a date palm from a 2000-year-old seed dug up from the Judean desert at the site of Herod the Great’s fortified palace in Masada. That makes the seed, whose age has just been verified by radiocarbon dating, the oldest ever to germinate.
