  1. Oranges are not wild fruits and they do not occur naturally in the wild. The orange is a hybrid between two citrus fruit pomelo and mandarin.  
  2.  Oranges are thought to have been cultivated in China 4,000 years ago, Chinese citrus farmers mixed citrus varieties until they got sweet tasting oranges similar to the one we eat today. They are mentioned in Chinese literature from 314BC.
  3. The orange tree is an evergreen tree. Their leaves remain green throughout the year.
  4.  If an orange is not picked from the tree, it can stay on the tree until the next season. They turn orange in winter and back to green in summer.
  5. Depending upon the type. Oranges can take about seven to fifteen months to ripen.
  6. The citrus got its English name Orange around the 1300s from the Sanskrit naranga ("Orange tree") whereas the use of orange as a color name in English was started in the 1500s
  7. Orange trees like lots of sunshine and lots of water, single orange takes about 50 liters of water to grow.
  8. A single orange plant can bear as many as 60,000 flowers but only 1% of those flowers will turn into fruit.
