Who doesn’t crave for “Banana?” The word banana comes from the Arabic word "banan", meaning finger, The scientific name for banana is 'musa sapientum' which translates as 'fruit of the wise man' Probably the most popular and the best known tropical fruit, in fact over 100 billion bananas are eaten throughout the world each year. Banana is considered a “fruit for all.” Besides being notably nutritious fruit there are also very interesting facts about the banana that can nourish your mind as well.



  1. Bananas were probably the first cultivated fruit, and the first banana farms were set in southeast Asia in the forests of Malaysia, Indonesia or the Philippines. Still, today many types of wild bananas are grown there. Bananas first appeared in written history in the 6th century B.C.  
  2. Bananas are curved because they grow upside-down towards the sun.
  3. Bananas float in water.
  4. There are more trade restrictions on bananas than on AK-47s.
  5. Banana Prices Have Decreased 37 Percent Since 1980, Due to higher efficiency in production, distribution, and transportation.
  6. Banana is a rich source of Water as more than 75% of Banana is Water.
  7. Bananas are rich in Potassium (Potassium-40), which is a radioactive isotope of Potassium. Bananas are naturally slightly radioactive (thanks to their potassium content)—but the level of radiation is not high enough to cause harm.
  8. The banana plant is not a tree, it is the world's largest herb.
  9. There are over 1000 different varieties of bananas grown around the world. Cavendish variety is the most common and most widely exported, 95% of banana exports come from the Cavendish variety. They are basically clones, and they do not have seeds which makes them nicer to eat.
  10. Natural bananas, earlier to domestication, do have seeds. But like seedless grapes, humans have discovered and mutated seedless varieties. The little brown specs in a banana are the traces of seeds that did not develop because of the mutation.
